2 areas need to be examined before we propose what are the possible areas that are likely to be tested for the coming GCE A level H2 Physics laboratory for JC tuition students or private candidates or students taking physics tuition classes.
(1) What were the laboratory questions asked in 2024 Paper 4 – GCE A level H2 Physics Laboratory Papers?
(2) With the kick-in of a new syllabus effective in 2026 a set of sample paper including Paper 4 GCE A level laboratory paper was provided.
2024 GCE A level H2 Physics science Laboratory
- 2024 plays with the standard aspects of a typical Physics GCE level laboratory examination papers by having 2 questions: one on electricity involving use of multimeter, and the other on mechanics involving use of stopwatch alongside a short experiment and 2 design questions. 2024 also has the usual elements of plotting a straight-line graph and manipulation of a given mathematical expression to Y = Mx + C in order to plot the right graph to determine gradient: M and y-intercept: C.
- 2024 Electricity question is for a simple circuit with the use of multimeter, and varying a known resistor to measure its potential difference.
- 2024 Mechanics question is water flow experiment involving the plotting of an exponential decay graph (curve graph), and quantification of half life. It also involves a thermal cooling experiment using a thermometer similar to this experiment in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OL6IZZk1i4 and there is a short design experiment within the cooling experiment.
- 2024 short experiment involves the balancing of a weight using rubber bands. Measurement of angle was required. We expected that to be asked in 2024 since angle measurement in 3D space is challenging (watch a similar experiment where physics tuition or private candidate or junior college student has to estimate an angle : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjUPLn5iB68). Further to this, angle measurement was tested in 2023.
- 2024 long design experiment is on wave specifically quantifying the frequency of a sound wave using the CRO. In 2023, question was on radioactivity, and 2022 on temperature.
- 2024 as per 2023, 2022, 2021 has tested manipulation of a mathematical expression to Y = Mx + C.
- 2024 H2 physics science laboratory paper is unusual and demanding in that the physics learners need to do a total of 3 graphs: 1 straight line and 2 curves.

Singapore Examination and Assessment Board also provided sample papers for the candidates. The H2 physics science laboratory papers can be accessed as follows:

There are numerous changes to the H2 physics science laboratory papers in 2026. There will be a separate article focusing on that.
Summary of science physics laboratory questions being asked:
- Principle of moment
- Oscillation of Pendulums (resonance and forced oscillation)
- Capacitance (not in the current H2 Physics 2025 GCE A level syllabus)
Projected questions to be asked for GCE A level H2 Physics science Laboratory / science laboratory / paper 4
- Electricity question involves the use of potentiometer to plot straight line graphs. A more challenging electricity question would be to test the maximum power theorem which involves plotting of a curve graph. An easier possibility would be to plot I-V graph of a bulb which is a curve.
- Mechanics question continues to do time measurement and likely to involve torsional oscillation, or wave movement. Questions involving use of spring or oil/different fluid as well as use of volume, mass, length and density measurement would be likely to be tested. Estimation of length or area or volume of an irregular object which was last tested in 2022 may come back in 2025. Rolling a ball down a slope into a sand pit would also be another possible question.
- Graphs required to be plotted involve straight line graph (possibly passing through origin to verify the proportionality relationship between 2 variables). Physics tuition or physics GCE students are expected to plot another 2 more graphs with plotted scale provided aside from the straight line graph. Of which, at least 1 graph would be a curve.
- Validity of an equation between 2 variables should be tested in 2025 since it was not asked in 2024, but tested in 2023.
- Angle measurement may continue to be asked as it is challenging.
- Design question could be on a topic: magnetism involving use of hall probe, or light waves/laser using diffraction grating or light gates and other means to determine object in translational or circular motion.
