2 areas need to be examined before we propose what are the possible areas that are likely to be tested for the coming GCE A level H2 Chemistry laboratory for JC tuition students or private candidates or students taking chemistry tuition classes.
(1) What were the laboratory questions asked in 2024 Paper 4 – GCE A level H2 Chemistry Laboratory Papers?
(2) With the kick-in of a new syllabus effective in 2026 a set of sample paper including Paper 4 GCE A level laboratory paper was provided.
2024 GCE A level H2 Chemistry science Laboratory
- Qualitative Analysis experiment was on amphoteric cations, and nitrate and chloride anions. White precipitates were produced as well as testing of ammonia gas (12 out of 55 marks). Gas test incidentally had not been asked in 2023 although in 2022, test for hydrogen gas was required.
- Titration experiment was iodometric titration involving the use of thiosulfate and starch as an indicator. One of such chemistry tuition experiments was recorded and can be viewed on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oEpOP-VppU. In 2023, acid-base titration was done using thymol blue when it changes from blue to yellow (18 out of 55 marks).
- Kinetic experiment was to be conducted involving the timing of a reaction when production of iodine turns starch indicator blue black. Within the question, there is a short design question with a slight twist on the concentration of the catalytic cations (17 out of 55 marks). Gas collection was asked in 2023 while thermochemistry was asked in 2022.
- Final design question is qualitative analysis of organic compounds distinguishing primary, secondary and tertiary alcohol, and aldehyde and ketones (8 out of 55 marks).

H2 Chemistry Sample Paper 4 Answer
Summary of science chemistry laboratory questions being asked:
• Enthalpy of solution involving endothermic salt.
• Redox titration involving potassium manganate(VII) and ethanedioic acid. Within the question there is a design question involving gas collection set up and stoichiometry calculation at rtp.
• Qualitative analysis was on organic compounds.
Projected questions to be asked for GCE A level H2 Chemistry science Laboratory / science laboratory / paper 4
- Qualitative Analysis experiment in 2025 would likely be organic chemistry or a mixed question with an inorganic salt or hydrogen peroxide (when oxygen gas test would be required)
- An alternative would be a Qualitative Analysis laboratory assessment on transition metal compound possibly Manganese(II) carbonate. Gas test if asked is likely to be carbon dioxide or oxygen.
- Titration is likely to be acid-base involving the use of thymolphthalein & methyl orange. Double indicator experiment involving use of sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid is therefore possible in the ambit of back titration.
- Enthalpy experiment or thermochemistry laboratory to be conducted by chemistry tuition students or private candidates is highly likely given that last 2 years it was not an area that was tested. Use of Q=mcT would be required for calculation.
- Finally the design question is likely to be kinetics or Ksp or Gibbs free energy involving the use of manipulation of mathematical expression to plot straight line when temperature or other factor varies.
- The other alternatives would be on gas collection including drawing and calculation or gravimetric technique.
